Rayz Kidz
The app connecting parents with their child care providers
Rayz Kidz is a mobile app that connects parents with the home-based child care providers who look after their children through the day. The provider logs the day as it happens, activities, meals, naps, and the parent follows along in real time. The same record becomes the monthly report and the invoice. The app has been in the stores for around four years, and we are the team that builds and extends it.

The Client

Rayz Kidz is based in Boston. Behind it is Annie, who comes from the childcare world rather than software: she knows what providers and parents need and hands us requirements in plain language.

The product has two sides, the app and a play-based curriculum; we build the app. It runs on iOS and Android in six languages and is funded through a mix of revenue and investment. We have been the engineering team behind the app for around four years, improving what is there and building what comes next.

How we work

Annie brings us a problem and a rough sense of what she wants, and we turn it into a designed feature, usually across a few rounds of screens with our designer before any code is written.

Chat is a good example. She had a handful of screens in mind, but messaging across families and provider groups needed more than that to hold together, so we scoped and designed the fuller version and built it. Reminders followed the same path, a light task-assignment layer for things like a scheduled fire drill or prep tied to a specific child.

What the app does

At the center is the family. A parent creates one, adds members, and invites the provider who looks after the children. Children sit inside the family as simple records with a name and age. Once invited, the provider can start logging.
Most of the daily use is logging.

Providers record activities and events as they happen or schedule them ahead, meals, naps, diaper changes, and the learning activities the program is built around, each with a time and an optional photo, all kept as history. Sleep checks are a more detailed version of the same idea. While a child naps, the provider records position and breathing at a set interval, and every check is saved. Time tracking runs alongside, logging how long each child was present, which later feeds the reports.
Around that core sits the rest of the product.

Photos upload to shared albums that notify the whole family. A provider looking after children from several families at once can group them and record one activity across the group. The calendar holds planned and completed events, including recurring ones set months ahead, and a child's activity can be exported as a PDF report for parents.

Billing runs through Stripe. The provider issues an invoice and tracks its status while the parent pays through a link. Subscriptions come in a free tier and two paid ones that set how large a family can grow. The app is fully localized into six languages: English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Armenian, Russian, and Somali.

What we're building now

The current work is an AI activity planner built on the app's existing library of activities, the collecting-leaves and clay-animal kind, most of them tied to a developmental skill. Until now a provider searched that library by hand. The planner lets them describe what they want in a mix of set fields and free text; a model reads the request against the library and returns the closest matches, ranked, to assemble into a plan. A plan can be followed as the day goes or scheduled through the calendar.

This is the first of three phases and runs a few months. Around it, the calendar is being rebuilt to hold activities as well as events, plans become reusable templates, and, further out, providers will be able to publish plans and rate how an activity went so others can see what worked. Annie had dismissed this idea a year ago; now it's a priority.
We had a working version of our app but were seeking to add complexity, while reducing the overall size and to increase speed and performance. As I come from a non-technical background, I really appreciate that the team is very collaborative.

They look to first understand what we're looking to accomplish and work together for the most efficient and effective way to get there. The team was able to find solutions to each of the challenges we gave them. The app speed is fast, and they were able to efficiently add more features while continuing to improve performance.

Outcome

The app has been live for around four years and earns money while development continues. There is no closing deliverable; Annie keeps a running backlog, and the planner is one item on a long list. The team is five people: a project manager, backend and mobile engineers, QA, and a designer who has contracted with us for years.
